Hmmm. I think then that it might be too upsetting - there is a fairly longish chunk on the details of the camps, and the probable sequence of events leading up to the family being taken away. Maybe you could cope with reading it yourself then deciding, but from what you say I don't know if I'd want to risk it.

'Everything is illuminated' was fantastic, I agree. Haven't read the Vikram Seth but was thinking of it for my mother - however if it contains too much detail about concentration camps I won't get it for her, as her mother, aunt and uncle all died in a camp and I don't think she'll want to read that.

I shall look out for the one by Jonathan Safran Foer. My goddaughter recommended The Book Thief to me - but I've already read it - and the Suite Francaise. Think I've reviewed them in my witterings. Quick summary: enjoyed both and recommend them.

Actually now I come to think of it none of the others were set in Nazi Germany, but were about the Holocaust: Jonathan Safran Foer "Everything is Illuminated" (set in Ukraine - I thought it was very good but it got mixed reviews in the group) and Irene Nemirovsky's "Suite Francaise" (which I must confess I didn't read as I think I had a particularly doom-laden Chapter of Doom to write at that point. The others in the group really liked this one). The one for next month is Markus Zusak "The Book Thief" which Auntie Doris reviews in her latest round up of reading.

It is only coincidental really, we all submit suggestions which get written on a bit of paper and folded and put into a box, and we draw a different one out each time. Admittedly the 3 we've done already are all ones I suggested (although I didn't realise at the time that they were all about the Holocaust) as they were books I'd bought but not got round to reading!

Glad you've got round to reading it - and that you found it rewarding! I remember you said you wanted to when I reviewed it about 18 months ago.

So, what are/were the other books set in Nazi Germany? Maybe I should join your bookgroup!
